Fellow duties also include collecting, analyzing, and interpreting statistical data and preparing epidemiologic reports. The applied epidemiology experience is supplemented by competency based professional development trainings and comradery-building programming.

Hired into the Rollins Epidemiology Fellows Program, fellows serve as early-career MPH-level epidemiologists for a two-year term within one of Georgia’s 18 local health districts or at the Georgia Department of Public Health. This position is not located at Emory, but rather at District 3-1 Cobb-Douglas in Marietta, GA. Up to 2 – 3 days / week of remote work is a possibility, negotiated with the health district supervisor.

To successfully complete and graduate from the Rollins Epidemiology Fellowship, fellows are minimally expected to complete an oral presentation, a surveillance evaluation/quality improvement project, and a significant data analysis project over the course of the two years. Fellows are expected to work on projects and activities related to seven Core Competencies:

1. 2027 Community Health Assessment (CHA)/Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP): The CHA is conducted every five years and provides qualitative and quantitative data on the health status, quality of life, and risk factors for residents in Cobb County and Douglas County. The CHA includes data analyzed by population subgroups such as age, race/ethnicity, gender, and geographic region to identify health disparities and health inequities. Further, trends over time are assessed and compared to state and national averages.
2. MySideWalk Infectious Disease Webpage: The fellow will assist the Health Equity Director with the management of the public-facing MySideWalk infectious disease webpage and ensure the data is current (evaluated 2 times/year). This webpage provides the public with access to the agency’s Community Health Assessment (CHA) data and updates on Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) strategies/action items.
3. Informatics and Data Visualization: The fellow will support the Epidemiology Center team in new informatics and data visualization initiatives, including syndromic surveillance analysis and disease trend visualization. The district utilizes Power BI to produce reports and dashboards for leadership.
